The short answer: heat-only sensitivity is a clue, not a diagnosis

Possible causes, from exposed dentin to problems deeper in the tooth

The possibilities are easier to understand when divided into four groups: surface or root exposure, structural damage, disease affecting the tooth, and recent dental treatment.

Surface or root exposure

Gum recession exposes a portion of the root that would normally be covered. The central question is not simply, “Which condition causes heat pain?” It is, “Which explanation fits the complete symptom pattern and the examination findings?”

How long the discomfort lasts—and what else happens with it—can help determine how promptly to seek care. It still cannot provide a diagnosis.
