About Decay Guide
An independent guide to everyday dental health — how decay and gum disease progress, and what daily care does and does not prevent.
Decay Guide covers the slow, ordinary processes that decide whether teeth last: how a cavity forms, how gum disease progresses, what erodes enamel, and which parts of that are reversible.
Most dental content is either marketing or scare copy. We try to be neither — where the evidence is mixed or the numbers vary widely between studies, we say so.
How this site is written
Decay Guide is written by a health writer, not by a dentist, and no article here has been reviewed by a clinician. We work from public patient-education sources — the NHS, the CDC, the American Dental Association and hospital patient guides — and link to them so you can check what we say. Figures such as pocket depths are quoted as the educational benchmarks those sources use, not as thresholds you can apply to yourself. Nothing here replaces an examination.
