How to clean a removable retainer every day

A daily routine should remove saliva, film, and loose debris without changing the appliance’s surface or shape. More pressure and stronger chemicals are not necessarily better.

Step 1: Rinse promptly

Remove the retainer as instructed and rinse it under cool or lukewarm running water. Prompt rinsing removes loose material before saliva and debris dry on the surface.

Do not substitute hot water on the assumption that hotter means cleaner. High heat can distort susceptible retainer materials and alter their fit.

Why toothpaste is not the default

Vinegar

Brush around the complete wire

  • The backs and biting surfaces of adjacent teeth
  • The gumline

Use a floss threader beneath the wire

Arrange a dental or orthodontic assessment if:

  • The wire feels loose or bent
  • A bonded point appears detached
  • Cleaning causes continuing pain or irritation
